1 Peter 1:14b-16 Passions and Patterns
“…do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
“…to the passions of your former ignorance,” What is my passion? What motivates me? What drives me? What does my daily schedule look like? Am I pursuing you, Lord, or other things?
“…since it is written…” Your written Word is what will transform my thinking and behavior. I will pursue holiness because You are holy. The closer I draw to you the more unholy I see myself. But ultimately Your holiness will engulf me, Praise the Lord! Someday there will not be a shred of unholiness in me and I will be new and free from this earthly body.
“You shall be holy, for I am holy” “shall be”. Future tense. A promise made possible by Jesus Christ and His perfect life, perfect sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection conquering death. By faith in Him I am clothed with His perfect righteousness and stand holy before a holy God. By faith I am saved! (Eph. 2:8-10)
Your sacrifice, Jesus, on the cross makes me holy now positionally and in the future practically.
Think on these things. Are they true of you? “Examine yourselves…” 2Cor. 13:5
